How do you live with ghost copies?

MessageAuthor

Hi all, I was quite surprised not to find usual "linked clips" concept in Reaper. This ghost copies workaround somehow solves this problem, but still not entirely (undo does not work for the contents for instance, no visual distinction etc). How do you live with it? Or maybe there IS something that matches this "linked clips" concept from other DAWs that I do not know about? Thanks.

I'm not sure of the terminology but in Reaper/Preferences/General there's an option to save Undo History with the project files?

There is no proper ghosted items (clips) functionality available in Reaper at the moment. Hopefully it will happen someday.

I'd also consider the way ghost copies (linked clips) are implemented in Reaper atm at least not ideal, and I rely a lot on them. For instance having to save the Midi clip each time you change something. And what really bugs me is the indication of ghosted clips with a tiny "*". Happened quite often here that I just overlooked it (especially in busy arrangements with small track size). So yes, I'd really like to see improvements here.

Yes it's not the best. At least with the external midi files it's semi-workable.. but in an ideal world they would be internally linked clips like with other software. That was my most painful thing about switching to Reaper.

yup, external midi files are quite weird :) -1 And (a propos) empty items (midi or audio), could be easier to draw. After creating them, you would double click them and decide, if they are midi, audio, or a you-name-it-item. ghost copies get +10, and ghost loops (like the ones in Logic) toggled on/off by a keycommand and playing until the next item placed on the same track, get +100, especially if they would work with Amalgamate Parts too.

Do you know where one can see the extention API documentation? Have you tried to offer your help for "core" development? I did, but got no answer (((

I've thought off quick fix for the problem in question. It consists of two parts: 1. Make ANY midi item the "ghost" one by default 2. get rid of confirmation window each time I exit midi editor I do not know if it is feasible via the extension API.
